Nvidia Leading the Way with AI Chips

It is no secret that when it comes to AI chips, Nvidia is the company leading the way. And with the announcement of their Ampere AI chip, they are continuing to push it further.
The new chip features 54 billion transistors, and can execute 5 petaflops of performance, or about 20 times more than Volta. The goal of the company is to give the public chips that push the technology forward, while also being economically feasible.
Nvidia’s advantage over its competition isn’t just about its hardware, but its software and partner ecosystem is where the competition could have the hardest time catching up. There are some competitors who could rival them in power, while others could challenge them in economics.
Intel is one of Nvidia’s biggest competitors, and they are a company whose AI software stack is second only to Nvidia, and are layered to provide support (through abstraction) to a variety of chips, including Xeon, Nervana, Movidius, and even Nvidia GPU’s. Last year, Intel acquired Habana Labs, which features two kinds of chips: Gaudi for training and Goya for inference. The company is betting that these two chips can match Nvidia very soon, and the MLPerf inference benchmark results from last year showed positive results for Goya.
Another challenger is GraphCore, a UK-based AI chip manufacturer. Their architecture is designed from the ground up to provide high performance and unicorn status. They are also working on their own software stack called Poplar. If Intel is going to have to do some catching up, so is GraphCore, but both are on a similar path. They are aiming to innovate their hardware in order to challenge Nvidia with a new and different approach.

But it’s more than just the chips themselves, it’s the economics behind them, and Nvidia still has the advantage there. With taking everything into account, it seems they are still the company to beat.
But the amount of innovation that is coming to the field is starting show a movement away from being a monoculture. With innovation coming from all kinds of places, in different shapes and forms, the AI chip market is going to see a lot of options and changes in the near future.
