Epic Games CEO: PS5 SSD is “Far Ahead” of High-End PC’s

2 min read
The Epic Games CEO had some glowing praise for the Playstation 5's new SSD.

As Epic Games unveiled their new Unreal Engine 5 engine for the next generation by showcasing it on the Playstation 5, they also also had some big praise for the Playstation 5’s power and specs.

When asked about what advancements in the PS5 that allow the Unreal Engine 5 to function at such a high level, Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney, said it was the system storage advancements that Sony hardware architect, Mark Cerny, revealed earlier this year that allows it to happen.

“I think, first of all, Sony has a massive, massive increase in graphics performance compared to previous generations. But you know, I guess we get that every generation? But Sony’s made another breakthrough that in many ways is more fundamental, which is a multi-order magnitude increase in storage bandwidth and reduction in storage latency.”

Sony revealed this tech back in March when it showed off its custom solid-state drive that targets at least 5GB per second in terms of bandwidth. For comparison, current PS4 drives run at a 50-100 MB/s.

“This is not just a whole lot of polygons and memory,” Sweeney explaiend, “It’s also a lot of polygons being loaded every frame as you walk around through the environment and this sort of detail you don’t see in the world would absolutely not be possible at any scale without these breakthroughs that Sony’s made.”

Sweeney says that Sony’s SSD is far ahead of “the best SSD solution you can buy on PC today”.

While not commenting on the comparisons between the PS5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, Sweeney confirmed that the engine the features shown in the tech demo would be able to work on all next-generation consoles.
