Apple Bans Fortnite Over V-Bucks Price Cut

Well, if you were expecting to see the words “Fortnite Banned” then mark it off your bingo cards. At least, if you’re someone who was playing mobile on your iPhone or iPad that is.
Earlier this week, Epic implemented its own monetization system inside of Fortnite that undercut Apple pretty significantly. It helped Epic save costs, gave them more money in pocket and was far easier to access thanks to the native platform.
Unfortunately for them, it also undercuts Apple’s rules about 30% of in store profits going to them. Which also means that Fortnite violated the Apple Store policy and sort of brought the consequences on themselves.
However, it does seem that this was something that Epic expected for a while now. They’ve been relatively vocal about their issues with the price gouging they experience from both Apple and Google. Saying that they consider the pricing to be outright ridiculous. That being said, players did have the options of paying Epic directly or going through the respective app stores.
Epic is not taking this decision laying down
This meant that Epic was making more money on in app purchases as well as full price purchases from both Play Store and Apple. Apple took it pretty personally and does not appear to want to play nice.
“Today, Epic Games took the unfortunate step by violating the App Store guidelines that are applied equally to every developer and designed to keep the store safe for our users. Epic has had apps on the App Store for a decade, and have benefited from the App Store ecosystem – including it’s tools, testing, and distribution that Apple provides to all developers. Epic agreed to the App Store terms and guidelines freely and we’re glad they’ve built such a successful business on the App Store. The fact that their business interests now lead them to push for a special arrangement does not change the fact that these guidelines create a level playing field for all developers and make the store safe for all users. We will make every effort to work with Epic to resolve these violations so they can return Fortnite to the App Store.”
Well you can say one thing for Apple, they may hide behind euphemisms but they do get their point across most times.
However, Epic is not taking this decision laying down. They’ve voiced concerns and frustrations with the Apple Store before, and they seem keen to make a statement with this decision. Officially filing a lawsuit against Apple with the goal of ending the company’s malicious policies and consumer hurtful mandates.
Lawsuits On Lawsuits
Right now there are no other updates from any other companies concerning this decision. Google has wisely stayed quiet on the issue, most likely waiting to see what happens with the current legal issue. Of course, Google is also being sued for issues that Wozniak has with YouTube, so they have their hands full.
One thing’s for sure, the mobile community of Fortnite are going to have a rude awakening. It was a pretty split second decision and the community will no doubt make their voices heard.
