Respawn Hints at New Shooter While Honoring 10th Anniversary

3 min read
The studio is hinting at a possible new shooter coming.

It’s been ten years since Vince Zampella and Jason West left Activision and founded their own studio, Respawn, and things are looking great for the studio. Last year saw the studio release two critical and commercial successes in Apex Legends and Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. In talking about the studio’s 10th anniversary, Zampella also hinted at future games from the company.

Zampella was promoted by EA to oversee multiple studios, including DICE LA.

“When you look backwards at [2019], it’s crazier than it was at the time,” Zampella told IGN, “When you see it all as a package, it’s like ‘Holy shit!’ but at the time we were just doing what we do. We’ve got a bunch of people that love to make games and love what they do and they did that.”

He continued to hint at what the future for DICE LA could be working on, a studio which has mostly served as support for other teams.

“The intention is for them to have their own identity. We’ll figure that out as we go. The COVID situation has thrown a kink in everything, so we’re still figuring [it] out.”

In describing what kind of game they will be making, Zampella had this to say:

“That team is a shooter team. Chances are it’s going to be something along those lines. There’s a lot of really good shooter talent there. But I don’t want to lock it in and say that’s definitely exactly what they’re doing, because we’re going to look at everything and pick something that feels amazing. The same tenets that apply to Respawn of doing something new and exciting and kind of breaking the genre a little bit is what we’re going to apply to DICE LA. We’re going to look at trying to do something cool. We want to do something that’s not competitive with other EA games so that we’re kind of filling in the right gaps in the portfolio. We have some really good ideas, but it’ll be a little bit [before they make any announcements].”

The question that is on every fan’s mind, however, is that of what the future of Respawn’s series, Titanfall, is. The series is beloved by players, but it just has never found the commercial success it was looking for, except for its spin-off, Apex Legends. When asked about the future of the series and a possible third game, Zampella was optimisitc:

“here’s nothing currently in development. But it’s always there. You see the little bits of stuff coming back [through the lore in Apex Legends]. At some point, I would personally like to see some kind of resurrection there. We’ll see if I can make that happen.”

We can only hope that there is still a future for Titanfall. Titanfall 2 was one of the best shooters of the last few years, and we would love to see the series get the recognition and popularity that it deserves.
