EA has formally announced Star Wars: Squadrons, a new dogfighting game set in a galaxy far, far, away coming out in just a few months.

EA has formally announced Star Wars: Squadrons, a first-person dogfighting game taking place after Return of the Jedi.

The game is being developed by Motive Studios and will feature both a single-player story mode and a multiplayer experience, with cross-play support across all platforms. It can be played in VR on PS4 and PC, with gameplay set to be featured at EA Play Live on June 18th.

As stated before, the single-player story is set after the Battle of Endor and the destruction of the Death Star II. It will bounce between two customizable pilots and show players both sides of the conflict. One pilot is part of the New Republic’s Vanguard Squadron and the other flies for Galactic Empire’s Titan Squadron.

It will feature brand new characters, as well as some familiar faces.

Ian Frazier, creative director at Motive, said in a press release:

“Through the collaboration of the teams at Motive and Lucasfilm, we’ve been able to create a high-fidelity starfighter experience with an authentic storyline that invites Star Wars fans to explore never-before-seen corners of the galaxy in their own ship. We’re excited to show all this in action this week at EA Play Live.”

The multiplayer for the game will comprise of 5v5 dogfights, with two modes announced so far. The first mode, Fleet Battles, has players tasked with destroying the other team’s flagship. The other mode, Dogfights, simply asks players to destroy as many opponents as possible.

The press release makes it clear that squad composition is important in the game, implying there will be multiple classes of ships to experiment with.

EA also confirmed that the game will include cosmetics and gameplay-related customization, but these will only be unlocked by playing the game.

The game is set to come out on October 2nd for PC, Xbox One, and Playstation 4. It will be available in both physical and digital editions for $39.99. EA Access and Origin Access Basic subscribers will be able to play up to 10 hours of the game and get 10% off if they choose to buy it. Origin Access Premier subscribers can play the full game upon release.
