Sony Fined Over $3Million for Misleading Refund Policy

Australia Strikes Again
Sony has been at the heart of a policy dispute for the last couple of weeks. Understandably, due to high tensions and the world being in the midst of a civil rights movement, the lawsuit has been under wraps.
Now, as the case was pushed further along by consistent legal moves, the ACCC in Australia sued the game publisher and tech giant. You may remember that this is not the first time that Australia and the gaming community have been in unison.
“Consumer guarantee rights do not expire after ad digital product has been downloaded and certainly do not disappear after 14 days or any other arbitrary date claimed by a game store or developer. What Sony told these consumers was false and does not reflect the consumer guarantee rights afforded to Australian consumers.”

Back in 2018, the ACCC went after publisher/developer Bethesda was sued for refund policies as well. When they released the game Fallout 76, gamers who wanted a refund were denied due to Bethesda’s policy. However, when gamers in Australia and the EU brought up more complaints, Bethesda eventually acquiesced.
This happened again when Steam users brought the same complaint to the ACCC. Once again, going the way of supporting the gamers due to Australia’s difference in laws.
Seems that Sony is just one more in the long list of companies that have tried to outplay a system that won’t take no for an answer.
Worth mentioning that this happened because several gamers tried to get refunds from the PlayStation store. Afterwards, Sony flat out refused to give refunds to the gamers that tried to get their money back.
While it may seem like a huge fight or win for the gaming community, $3.5Million is chump change to them. Still, nice to see some justice dispensed in a world that is grappling with a broken justice system. Have to take the small wins where we can get them.
