FINALLY! We have our first look at the gameplay of Starfield, the long-awaited space RPG from Bethesda.

As the closer to Xbox’s Games showcase on Sunday, June 12th, the reveal of Starfield’s gameplay has been something players have been waiting for for a very long time. It was teased throughout the show and when it finally came, it certainly gave us a deep dive into just how the game will feel to play.

We saw a variety of gameplay mechanics through the gameplay, starting out with a shot of space itself before moving into exploring local life on a planet, resource mining, and then into combat when invading a hostile area. We saw the gameplay swithc between first- and third-person perspective, something that has long been present in Bethesda games. It is important to note that we started with third-person, which could be implying a greater focus on that perspective, as it has always been more of an afterthought in the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games.

We saw that you will be able to fly your own ship and engage in space combat and will be able to land at any spot on any planet, of which Bethesda informed us was around 1,000 total.

Bethesda also gave us a glimpse at the character customization of the game, some glimpses at their usual choice-based systems, and also base-building. A lot of it was very similar to what No Man’s Sky has to offer, just with that Bethesda RPG narrative and style.

There’s a lot of new information in the 15-minute video and it does a lot to build even more hype for the game. Starfield is Bethesda’s first original IP in quite some time and has seen a long development. The game is set for a release in early 2023 after a short delay, and will be coming to PC and Xbox. Since Bethesda was bought out by Xbox, the game will not be coming to PlayStation – at least not at launch.
